MANUFACTURING JOB FACTS

U.S. subsidiaries support 10,700 manufacturing jobs in Mississippi. Manufacturing companies tend to have a strong "multiplier" effect on the economy-stimulating a substantial amount of activity and jobs in other sectors through their demand for inputs from other suppliers.

Overall, approximately 48.2% of jobs at U.S. subsidiaries in Mississippi are in manufacturing industries.

ONE COMPANY'S STORY

Nissan Motor Company, a U.S. subsidiary of a Japanese auto maker, proudly celebrated the opening of its new manufacturing facility in Canton in May 2003. The plant will eventually employ a total of 5,300 Mississippians. Due to the increased demand for Nissan vehicles, the company decided to expand the operation before it was even opened. The expansion alone represents a $500 million investment and, when finished, the facility will be capable of producing 400,000 vehicles per year. The economic impact of the project extends beyond the plant as there will be an estimated 26,000 indirect jobs created by its presence.

*Beginning August 2004, the Commerce Department changed the focus of its reported data on jobs supported by foreign direct investment (FDI). From this point on, all FDI statistics will refer only to companies having a majority of foreign ownership. Prior to this change, the Commerce Department followed international standards of including companies that had 10% or more foreign ownership.
