U.S. subsidiaries in Massachusetts have consistently supported a significant number of jobs in the state. They now employ 191,000 Massachusetts workers-an increase of 31% over five years.

In comparison to other states, Massachusetts has proven to be an attractive location for international employers, ranking 11th in the United States in the number of employees supported by U.S. subsidiaries.

MANUFACTURING JOB FACTS

U.S. subsidiaries support 41,500 manufacturing jobs in Massachusetts. Manufacturing companies tend to have a strong "multiplier" effect on the economy-stimulating a substantial amount of activity and jobs in other sectors through their demand for inputs from other suppliers.

Overall, approximately 21.7% of jobs at U.S. subsidiaries in Massachusetts are in manufacturing industries.


ONE COMPANY'S STORY

Novartis, a U.S. subsidiary of a Swiss pharmaceutical and health research company, announced an investment of $250 million last year to create the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research. The new facility in Cambridge will employ more than 400 scientists and technology experts. Novartis plans to increase its investment over the next decade to $4 billion and will expand to 1,000 employees.

From this point on, all FDI statistics will refer only to companies having a majority of foreign ownership. Prior to this change, the Commerce Department followed international standards of including companies that had 10% or more foreign ownership.
