U.S. subsidiaries in Maine have consistently supported a significant number of jobs in the state. They now employ 33,000 Maine workers-an increase of nearly 48% over five years.

In fact, the relative portion of jobs in the state supplied by U.S. subsidiaries has remained strong over time. They provide the livelihood for almost 6.4% of Maine's private-sector workforce. The state ranks 8th in the country in the share of its workforce supported by U.S. subsidiaries.

U.S. subsidiaries support 10,200 manufacturing jobs in Maine. Manufacturing companies tend to have a strong "multiplier" effect on the economy-stimulating a substantial amount of activity and jobs in other sectors through their demand for inputs from other suppliers.

Overall, approximately 30.9% of jobs at U.S. subsidiaries in Maine are in manufacturing industries.


ONE COMPANY'S STORY

Philips Elmet, a subsidiary of Dutch-owned Royal Philips Electronics, operates a large manufacturing site in Lewiston where they employ 400 Maine residents. The site is responsible for producing world class custom precision machined and fabricated parts to exacting customer drawings and specifications. As part of the Philips world-family, the company supplies Tungsten lamp filaments and other components globally to Philips lighting and semiconductor plants.
