MANUFACTURING JOB FACTS

U.S. subsidiaries support 53,300 manufacturing jobs in Kentucky, an increase of 6% over five years. Manufacturing companies tend to have a strong "multiplier" effect on the economy-stimulating a substantial amount of activity and jobs in other sectors through their demand for inputs from other suppliers.

Overall, approximately 60.8% of jobs at U.S. subsidiaries in Kentucky are in manufacturing industries.


ONE COMPANY'S STORY

Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America, aU.S. subsidiary of Japan's Mitsubishi Electic Corporation, recently announced plans for a $32 million expansion of its Maysville facility, producing starters, alternators, ignition coils and vehicle entertainment components for major North American automakers. The expansion will add about 100 jobs to the region, making MEAA the second-largest employer in Maysville. The expansion calls for a new 40,000 square foot building and millions of dollars of new technology to be added to the Maysville plant, bringing it up to 500,000 square feet.

*Beginning August 2004, the Commerce Department changed the focus of its reported data on jobs supported by foreign direct investment (FDI). From this point on, all FDI statistics will refer only to companies having a majority of foreign ownership. Prior to this change, the Commerce Department followed international standards of including companies that had 10% or more foreign ownership.
