MANUFACTURING JOB FACTS

U.S. subsidiaries support 1,700 manufacturing jobs in Alaska, an increase by 13% over five years. Manufacturing companies tend to have a strong "multiplier" effect on the economy-stimulating a substantial amount of activity and jobs in other sectors through their demand for inputs from other suppliers.

Overall, approximately 15.2% of jobs at U.S. subsidiaries in Alaska are in manufacturing industries.

ONE COMPANY'S STORY

The Greens Creek Mine, a U.S. subsidiary of UK-based Rio Tinto, employs 250 Alaskans at its facility in the Tongass National Forest. The mine is one of the largest in the U.S., mining gold, silver, zinc and lead. The company and the mining community were honored in 2002, when materials taken from the Greens Creek site were used in making the medals for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics.
