December 14, 2005

Missouri and Illinois rank in the top 20 states in the nation for the number of people working for U.S. subsidiaries of companies headquartered outside the United States.

The Washington, D.C.-based Organization for International Investment said Missouri had 87,200 "insourced" jobs, ranking it No. 20, while Illinois had 254,900 insourced jobs, ranking it fourth.

Missouri's insourced jobs make up 3.8 percent of the total workforce, and Illinois' insourced jobs make up 5 percent. The majority of insourced jobs in both states are manufacturing, with 46 percent in Missouri and 32 percent in Illinois.

In Missouri, some of the companies insourcing jobs include DaimlerChrysler, GKN Aerospace Services, Nestle USA Inc., Reed Elsevier, Reuters America and Unilever United States Inc., among others. In Illinois, some of the companies insourcing jobs include LaSalle Bank, BASF Corp., DaimlerChrysler, Honda, McCain Foods Ltd., Sodexho Inc. and Zurich North America.

Nationally, California has the most insourced jobs at 561,000, followed by New York, Texas, Illinois and Florida.
