Legal issues often arise that uniquely or disproportionately impact U.S. subsidiaries of global companies. For example, recent disputes have examined whether a state can exercise personal jurisdiction over a foreign corporation (see Bauman v. DaimlerChrysler in 2011). Other cases have looked at whether U.S. law can be applied extraterritorially over a foreign company’s activities in another nation (see Kiobel v. Royal Dutch Petroleum in 2012). OFII frequently participates in the legal debate by filing amicus briefs.
